Who is a Breast Enlargement Candidate?
The ideal candidates for surgery of breasts enlargement are healthy people, emotionally stable and with a clear understanding of what results can be obtained from the surgery.
Many women wish an increase of their breasts after a pregnancy or breast-feeding that has caused the breast to sag and appear empty. Although surgery does not affect future pregnancies, you must know that the breasts can be affected after a new pregnancy.
You also may be a candidate for breast enlargement if you simply desire larger breasts, if you have a moderate degree of breast sagging and/or smaller breasts. If you have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other, then breast enlargement may solve your problem.
During the first consultation your plastic surgeon will evaluate the size and firmness of the skin and your general state of health as well as the new best suitable breast shape. An exploration of the breasts will be completed at this meeting and in some cases a mammography study will be requested.
The different surgical techniques will be explained to you and the size and the form of your new breasts and the options and combinations of procedures will be discussed. You must set out your expectations in a sincere and frank way, so that the plastic surgeon understands your wishes and can evaluate and give you the realistic possibilities and alternatives available for your problem, informing you about the risks and limitations of the surgery. Further, the variations of anesthetic will be explained to you and type determine, according to your surgery.
It is important to us that you as patient ask any questions you may need answered to eliminate all doubts and concerns. It is an advantage if you are a non-smoker, however, if you do smoke, we highly advice to stop smoking 2-3 weeks prior to the surgery. We will ask you for any medicine or vitamin intake, the number of previous pregnancies and if you are currently pregnant.
Instructions from Dr Roger Amar in preparing yourself for surgery will include the norms on food and liquid intake. We advise to have relative or friend, collect you from the hospital.
During the Surgery – Breast Augmentation
The breast surgery is completed in an operating room, within a clinic or hospital, with patients discharged on the following day. The breast surgery is carried out under a general anesthesia.
The breast increase is completed through a small incision that is placed around the areola, in the furrow under the chest or the armpit, depending on the preferences of the patient and surgeon. The incision is designed so that the resulting scar is almost invisible. Through this incision we create a pocket and the prosthesis is placed directly underneath the mammary muscle. Water drains are placed that will be removed in a couple of days and the dressings or a bandage on the breasts. The surgery procedure is between 1 and 2 hours.
Dr. Roger Amar applies almost invisible sutures after the surgery: unlike the most common techniques, where the incision is the nipple or under the breast, which can leave a visible scar. Dr Roger Amar’s prefers the technique with the incision in the area of the armpit, so that it is almost invisible. This aspect is very important and should be considered at the time prior to surgery as it will make a difference to the way you see the implants.
Recovery Time and Results
You are likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you’ll be up and around in 24 to 48 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by your doctor.
Within several days, the gauze dressings, if you have them, will be removed, and you may be given a surgical bra. You should wear it as directed by your surgeon. You may also experience a burning sensation in your nipples for about two weeks, but this will subside as bruising fades.
Your stitches will come out in a week to 10 days, but the swelling in your breasts may take three to five weeks to disappear.
Getting back to normal
You should be able to return to work within a few days, depending on the level of activity required for your job.
Follow your surgeon’s advice on when to begin exercises and normal activities. Your breasts will probably be sensitive to direct stimulation for two to three weeks, so you should avoid much physical contact. After that, breast contact is fine once your breasts are no longer sore, usually three to four weeks after surgery.
Your scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks. Then they may remain the same size for several months, or even appear to widen. After several months, your scars will begin to fade, although they will never disappear completely.
Routine mammograms should be continued after breast augmentation for women who are in the appropriate age group.
Results – Your new look
For many women, the result of breast augmentation can be satisfying, even exhilarating, as they learn to appreciate their fuller appearance.
Regular examination by your plastic surgeon and routine mammograms for those in the appropriate age groups at prescribed intervals will help assure that any complications, if they occur, can be detected early and treated.
Your decision to have breast augmentation is a highly personal one that not everyone will understand. The important thing is how you feel about it. If you’ve met your goals, then your surgery is a success.
- After the surgery and in order to achieve most natural results, it is recommended to realize a daily massage to help prevent the hardening of the implants
- Do not raise your arms or lift weight in the first days
- Sleep on your back during the first few days
- Do not bathe, swim or sunbathe until the surgeon tells you to do so
- Follow strictly the advice given by your surgeon, before and after surgery. This is important to avoid possible problems and risks and for satisfactory results
Can I breast feed after a Breast implant Surgery?
It is possible to nurse without any problems or risks. Many women have decided to nurse and have no records of having experienced any problems.
Is it possible to lose sensitivity of any breast area?
Although it is possible to lose sensitivity, it is minimal and rare. Some women report that their nipples become oversensitive, under-sensitive, or even numb. You may also notice small patches of numbness near your incisions. These symptoms usually disappear within time, but may be permanent in some patients.
Can the implant break?
Occasionally, breast implants may break or leak. Rupture can occur as a result of injury or even from the normal compression and movement of your breast and implant, causing the man-made shell to leak. If a saline-filled implant breaks, the implant will deflate in a few hours and the salt water will be harmlessly absorbed by the body.
Will I experience a lot of pain after surgery?
You will feel some pressure and moderate pain in the first few days. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by your doctor
What type of anesthetic will I need, general or local?
Breast augmentation is usually performed with a general anesthesia, so you’ll sleep through the entire operation. Some surgeons may use a local anesthesia, combined with a sedative to make you drowsy, so you’ll be relaxed but awake, and may feel some discomfort.
How long is the surgery?
Depending on the technique chosen, the surgery can last from 2-3 hours.
When will I be able to see the benefits of my surgery?
You will see the immediate size increase. The bruising and scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks. Then they may remain the same size for several months, or even appear to widen. After several months, your scars will begin to fade, although they will never disappear completely.
When can I sunbathe?
You should wait until your surgeon tells you it is ok to sunbathe.
When will I get my medical discharge?
This varies patient by patient and your surgeon will inform you accordingly at your follow up consultations.
Will I take normal mammograms after surgery?
Yes, everything will be as it normally would be. Routine mammograms should be continued after breast augmentation for women who are in the appropriate age group.
Can smoking affect me?
Smoking is never good for anyone, with surgery it is strongly advised to abstain for as long as possible.
Can implants be dangerous for my health?
There is no proof that implants can affect your health. A few women with breast implants have reported symptoms similar to diseases of the immune system, such as scleroderma and other arthritis-like conditions. These symptoms may include joint pain or swelling, fever, fatigue, or breast pain. But research has found no clear link between silicone breast implants and the symptoms of what doctors refer to as “connective-tissue disorders,”.
What about any secondary effects
It is possible that you may have small lumps, but they usually disappear quickly.
